How Long Does It Take Jobs to Get Back to You Reddit
How long do you wait to hear back from a company after applying?
I have been applying throughout the Christmas period and I know I won't get any reply up until the second week of January at least. But I'd like to know what's the average wait time since your online application till you get a reply? (assuming it's positive)

The average should theoretically be about two weeks, which is long enough for a company to accumulate a certain number of applicant responses and short enough that people aren't waiting forever. However, the standard deviation on that average is through the roof. Some companies have systems that auto-reject you so the wait time is 10 milliseconds, some companies may take a month or so as the managers who wanted to put out the job listing put off reviewing candidates or scheduling interviews, and plenty of them never send you a response. You really just have to keep applying to other jobs in the mean time, hoping someone eventually gets back to you in a timely manner.

Then how do you manage to keep a track of all the applications when they call you for a follow up? You apply to hundreds and then one calls up. You've got no clue what the job description said, what the company or the position is about. Would love to know how this "constant applying" helps.

You have a job when you have a paycheck. Until that happens, you keep applying. You wait for the bus not on a job.

Last year I applied the second week of December and was called for an interview the third week of January. I was hired and started in early February. A lot of employers are hesitant to hire in December because they only have 30 days to get new hires enrolled in benefits and that can be problematic if they are closed for Christmas/New Years.

It very much depends on the company sizes where you are applying to. For example, Google and the likes receive over 2 million applications per year and, like many major players, certainly use filtering software to go through the CVs. Some systems return match results in a split second, others have a different setup for the release. Sadly enough, many companies do not return any reply at all. To keep your spirit and energy up, just keep a track of the "large company" applications and ignore them (different file for your records) after a month or so. For smaller companies, they might have less manual resources to handle the application piles, but here you can pick up the phone and ask for a status. This "old school" method still works and shows the employer that you are truly interested in them. All the best for your search!

Silly. We get hundreds of applications for each position. 90% are never seen by human eyes. This isn't the 1950's, when Hazel in Personnel actually read them all.

I don't bother with big corporations anymore because I was getting rejection letters after eight months.
The interviews I've had were usually the day of applying but those were very small companies and the emailed applications went directly to the director/CEO. I also have a self hosted online portfolio so I can track hits when someone actually physically reads my resume and clicks the link. It's varied between 3 days to 3 weeks.

How on Earth did you get in touch with the Director or the CEO? Isn't that risky?

I hate online applications as they're easy to get lost in the shuffle. Many times calling in for a follow up is the best or only way to insure someone responds.
level 2
Calling who? Most online applications don't have any number on them. At best, a generic email address for technical concerns.

if you don't hear back after a week, it's more than likely your resume didn't make the cut after the applicant tracking system filtered your resume.
with so many companies using applicant tracking systems to filter resumes, it's a fairly quick process to narrow down a handful of applicants for further review/follow-up.
i would keep searching and applying to jobs in the meantime. you'll get an opportunity. good luck!
