How to Zoom Into the Map Again Minecraft
According to both Notch'southward Twitter (no link) and the wiki, maps accept some kind of settable zoom:
A zoom level, which volition somehow be decided at the time the map is created.
I have no idea how to fix this. Anyone know?
EDIT: based on fjdumont's answer, how is it calculated? Is there anything I can exercise (such as craft it in a certain place) to give information technology a zoom level close to what I want?

You can zoom map files, but you have to practice it by editing your NBT files. This answer is thanks to this redditor:
If you're willing to swoop deep into the NBT files, you can adjust the map's center and zoom levels. Just don't spiral with dimension (locks the map) or width/height — it doesn't work. The files are under
<map-name>/Information/map_X.dat
, where X is the map number.
Y'all'll need to apply an editor like NBTEdit to edit the files.

Is this single player just? Or does it work on SMP without server access?

@TomWijsman: Won't work on SMP without file organization access, merely it wouldn't surprise me if at that place'southward a plugin for Bukkit that allows configuration through in-game commands.

From version 1.4, you can zoom maps in game, as the whole process of map-making is changed:
-
Beginning, a blank map is created
This blank map will not start recording immediately, as maps previously did. -
The blank map can be activated by right clicking it, which turns it into a map at the most zoomed in level (i px/1 block)
-
To scale the map by a factor of two, have the map and recraft it as follows:
Each time this is done the map will scale out, so from 1px -> 1 block, to 1 px -> iv blocks, to 1 px -> 16 blocks and so on. This can be done a maximum of 5 times. Maps cannot exist scaled back in, simply out.

Looks like aye, this is the work of a mod. Here'southward how you tin can do it:
- Download NBTedit from here
- Unzip the ZIP file
- Run NBTedit
- Click File -> Open
- Navigate to your save folder
- Get to the "Data" folder
- Open up the
map_0
file. If its notmap_0
yous desire to edit, choose the correct i. - Aggrandize the "information: seven entries" co-operative
- Change the "scale" value to the ane you want. I chose i, just it can be anything.

When crafting a zoomed out map with eight pieces of paper, shift-clicking on the output map in the crafting tabular array does non make a newly scaled map

first of all make a map, employ it so you accept a really zoomed in map, and then put it in the center of the crafting table, surround it by eight pieces of paper and then normal click information technology! if you lot shift click it, information technology will not zoom out there is a problems to where it will not zoom out if you lot shift click then normal click and there you go

The zoom level is calculated depending on the time yous craft information technology. You can not prepare/reset or choose it yourself.

From the Wiki, as it currently stands (1.6.4) "A zoom level, which will somehow be decided at the time the map is created. This was mentioned past Notch, but is non currently in the game. All maps take a scale of i pixel = an 8x8 block square"

@James - y'all could perhaps post that as an answer

For those still confused: "will somehow exist decided" means it's non decided in the current implementation of Minecraft yet. Hence this answer and relevant speculation is wrong...
