"Alone Again (Naturally)" is a song by Irish vocaliser-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan. It was released in 1972 at the same time every bit – but not included on – his anthology Back to Front, and was a popular hit.

The unmarried spent half dozen non-consecutive weeks at No. ane on the United States Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, which ranked it equally the No. ii song for 1972. In Casey Kasem's American Top 40 of the 1970s, "Lone Again (Naturally)" ranked every bit the 5th most-pop song of the decade (Debby Boone's "You Light Upward My Life" was No. 1). It too spent vi weeks at No. ane on the Easy Listening nautical chart,[4] and reached No. three on the UK Singles Chart.[5] The song is included on O'Sullivan'south The Berry Vest of Gilbert O'Sullivan anthology (2004) on the EMI record label. Big Jim Sullivan plays the guitar break in the original recorded version of the song.

The vocal was involved in an important 1991 court case which held that sampling of music – every bit had been washed with O'Sullivan's recording – can constitute copyright infringement.

Lyrics [edit]

"Solitary Again (Naturally)" is a melancholy, introspective ballad. In the first verse, the vocalizer contemplates suicide after having been left "in the lurch at a church"; in the second, he wonders if there is a God; finally, he laments the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said the vocal is non autobiographical: for example, his mother was live during its composition, and he was non close to his father, who was fell to his mother and died when the vocaliser was 11 years sometime.[6]

Reception [edit]

The vocal received extensive radio airplay in the months after its release, and was critically praised. O'Sullivan commented that "Neil Diamond covered 'Alone Over again (Naturally)' and said he couldn't believe a 21-year-quondam wrote it, but for me information technology was just i vocal I had written".[vii] Neil Sedaka stating when he covered the song in 2020 that he wished that he himself had written the song, because its complexity was more typical of someone much older than 21.[viii]

Nautical chart performance [edit]

Copyright lawsuit [edit]

Grand Upright Music, Ltd v. Warner Bros. Records Inc. was a copyright case heard by the United States District Court for the Southern Commune of New York. The case pitted O'Sullivan against Biz Markie later on the rapper sampled O'Sullivan'due south song "Alone Again (Naturally)". The court ruled that sampling without permission can be copyright infringement. The judgment changed the hip hop music industry, requiring that music sampling exist preapproved past the original copyright owners to avoid a lawsuit.[25]

Maison Ikkoku [edit]

This vocal and O'Sullivan's "Get Down" were featured as the opening and ending for episode 24 of the popular Japanese anime Maison Ikkoku, based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi. O'Sullivan was signed to production visitor Kitty Picture's associated record label, Kitty Records, which wanted to employ the anime'south popularity as a way to promote the singer in Japan. According to serial director Kazuo Yamazaki, the songs were dropped after just 1 episode because they were unpopular with viewers. They were not included on the English-language American release of the anime, replaced by the previously used Japanese theme songs.

The song was also used every bit the ending theme for the 1986 live-activeness Maison Ikkoku flick, Apartment Fantasy.

Notable cover versions [edit]

Several artists have covered the song. A recording by Andy Williams was the title track for the U.South. release of his anthology of cover songs afterwards in 1972. Amidst the notable covers are versions by Nina Simone, included as a bonus rail on the 1988 digital reissue of her 1982 album Provender on My Wings; and by Lazlo Bane'southward frontman Republic of chad Fischer, from the 2009 animated moving picture Water ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Both feature substantially rewritten lyrics; Simone'due south version savagely exhumes her troubled relationship with her late father, whereas Fischer's humorously explores the desire of an acorn for the fictional prehistoric squirrel who once chased it. In 2015, Diana Krall released a duet version with Michael Bublé on her album Wallflower.[26]
